What to Expect in your first few Psychotherapy Sessions:
- A Safe Space: This is a place where you can express your thoughts and feelings freely where you will definitely be judged.
- Active Listening: Karen will listen attentively, seeking to understand your experiences and perspectives. She will ask questions.
- Empathy: Expect to be met with understanding and compassion, not criticism or judgement.
- Personalised Approach: Therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Karen will tailor strategies and techniques to your unique needs and situations.
- Exploration of Feelings: You'll delve into your emotions and (when you are ready) even those that are uncomfortable, to foster understanding and growth.
- Goal Setting: Together, you will set achievable goals for your mental health journey and your life.
- Progress Tracking: If you are willing to go further, regular assessments will be made to track your progress and adjust the therapy plan as needed.
- Homework: You may be given tasks or exercises to do outside of sessions to reinforce what you've learned.
- Emotional Ups and Downs: Therapy can be challenging and emotionally intense, but ultimately rewarding.
- Endings: Once you've met your goals, you and your therapist will discuss ending therapy, ensuring you're equipped to maintain your progress.

- Be Honest: Honesty with yourself and your therapist is crucial for effective therapy.
- Rest: I understand that being well rested in simply not possible. Some people plan to come to the sessions being well rested (Nap before), others just sort of fit the session in between life's obligations. Either way we will adapt together.
- Time Management: Arrive on time to make the most of your session.
- Journal: Consider keeping a journal of thoughts or feelings that arise between sessions.

If you have made it this far in this rather "boring" set of lists. Here is what I think you should really do to prepare for your first visit.
- Embrace the Journey: Understand that psychotherapy is a journey of self-discovery and healing. It's not about ticking off a checklist, but about embracing the process, with all its ups and downs.
- Be Authentic: Be honest and authentic in your sessions. This is your space to explore your thoughts and feelings without judgment.
- Trust the Process: Have faith in the process and your therapist's expertise. They're there to guide you, providing a safe and supportive environment for your growth.
- Reflect and Apply: Take some time after each session to reflect on what you've learned and find ways to apply it in your daily life.
- Be Patient: Change takes time. Don't rush the process. Celebrate small victories and progress, no matter how minor they may seem.
